Providence Basketball Seeded Third in 2004 BIG EAST Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The Providence College men's basketball team (20-7, 11-5) will enter the upcoming BIG EAST Championship as the No. 3 seed and will face the winner of the first-round contest between Seton Hall and Villanova on Thursday, March 11 at 9:00 p.m. at Madison Square Garden on ESPN. Seton Hall, the No. 6 seed for the tournament, finished the season with a 20-8 overall mark and a 10-6 record in conference play. Villanova enters the championship as the No. 11 seed after compiling a 14-15 overall record,and finishing 6-10 in BIG EAST games.

Providence has earned a first-round bye in the 2004 Championship by virtue of its third-place finish in the regular season standings. The Friars hold an all-time record of 15-23 at the BIG EAST Tournament. Providence won its only BIG EAST Tournament title in 1994 when the team defeated Georgetown, 74-64, in the championship game.

Providence played both Seton Hall and Villanova twice this season. The Friars and the Pirates have met 79 times in the all-time series with Providence holding a 42-37 lead in the series. The teams first met this season on January 12 at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Friars earned a 63-60 victory over the Pirates. Seton Hall handed Providence one of its four home losses, 55-46, on February 1. The Friars are 2-3 all-time against the Pirates in the BIG EAST Championship.

Providence defeated Villanova in both of the team's meetings, but the Wildcats own a 43-34 advantage all-time in the 77 team meetings. This season, the Friars won at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, 62-56, on January 21and handed Villanova a 100-74 loss at Villanova, Pa. on February 11. Providence is 1-5 all-time against Villanova in the BIG EAST Tournament.

The BIG EAST Tournament will take place on March 10-13 at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y.
