LOWELL, Mass. -- Senior Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) scored two goals, including the game winner to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over UMass Lowell on Sunday, February 8 at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. The win was the third consecutive victory for the Friars who improved to 13-9-6 overall and 5-8-5 in Hockey East play. UMass Lowell fell to 8-18-4 overall and 5-9-2 in league action.
Providence took a 1-0 lead at 4:25 of the first period as Zingoni scored his 11th goal of the season. Senior co-captain Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta.) made a perfect pass to streaking Zingoni, who skated in on a breakaway against UMass Lowell netminder John Yaros and beat him fivehole. The Friars dominated the first period as they outshot the River Hawks, 15-4, but they could only score one goal.
Providence scored two goals in the second period to increase its lead to 3-0. Loughlean deflected a shot from senior co-captain Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) past Yaros at 12:56 to give the Friars a 2-0 lead. With 1:15 remaining in the period, Zingoni scored his second goal of the night as converted on another breakaway.
In a wild start to the third period, the River Hawks got on the board just 22 seconds into the period as Cleve Kinley scored from in close. Providence quickly responded as senior Jason Platt (Portola Valley, Calif.) scored at 00:58 on a great effort to make the score 4-1. UML's Ben Walter brought the River Hawks to within 4-2 as he scored a short-handed goal on a high wrist shot that glanced off the cross bar and into the net at 4:57.
The River Hawks pressured the Friars, but did not get any closer as Goepfert finished with 22 saves. Yaros had 31 saves in the loss.
