Men's Hockey Defeated By UMass Lowell, 4-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 4-3, by UMass Lowell on Saturday, March 6 at Schneider Arena in the regular season finale.

UMass Lowell opened the scoring at 11:04 of the second period when Bobby Robins skated in on a breakaway and beat PC goalie Bobby Goepfert (Kings Parks, N.Y.). While on a 4-on-3 power play, the River Hawks increased their lead to 2-0 at 15:55 of the second period as Andrew Martin fired a one-timer over Goepfert's right shoulder. The Friars pulled to within one goal before the completion of the middle period when PC freshman Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.) converted a power-play feed from senior Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta.) and freshman Bill McCreary (Howell, Mich.).

A wild final period began when Lowell's Mark Pandolfo scored the first of his two goals in the period just one minute in. Pandolfo fired a wrist shot past from the right face-off circle past Goepfert to increase the River Hawks' lead to 3-1. The Friars again pulled to within one goal just 1:03 later when senior Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) skated around Lowell goalie Chris Davidson and slipped the puck into the open net.

Providence was able to tie the contest with just under five minutes remaining in regulation when junior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored on the power play. Chaput fired a shot past Davidson from the right post after tape-to-tape passes from teammates Luke Irwin (Bloomington, Minn.) and Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.).

UMass Lowell gained the final advantage with 1:58 remaining when Pandolfo tallied for the second time. Pandolfo converted from Elias Godoy and Peter Tormey, to put the River Hawks up, 4-3.

Goepfert finished the contest with 21 saves while Davidson recorded 40 saves in the victory.

Providence will begin a best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series at the University of New Hampshire on Thursday, March 11.
