BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore goaltender Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) made 36 saves to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Boston University on Friday, February 6 at Walter Brown Arena. For Goepfert, it marked his third career shutout and his first in Hockey East action.
The Terriers controlled the first period, but Goepfert was impressive as he stopped all 13 BU first period shots, including a breakaway attempt by Mark Mullen. The Friars came out stronger early in the second period. Providence's best chance came with 7:32 remaining in the second period when freshman defenseman Dinos Stamoulis (Carle Place, N.Y.) made a good play to keep the puck in the PC zone and skated in alone against BU netminder Sean Fields, but his shot from the slot missed the net.
Despite being outshot 23-12 after two periods, the Friars struck first at 4:45 of the third period. Senior co-captain Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta.) pounced on a rebound after off Fields's pad and fired his fifth goal of the season. Senior Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) and junior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I) assisted on the goal. The Terriers kept the pressure on the Providence end, but Goepfert kept up his strong play. Goepfert made some great saves, but he had a little help as the Terriers hit the post with less than six minutes to play. At 16:01, the Friars got an insurance goal from senior Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) as he was set up by senior Mike Robinson (Biggar, Sask.) and junior David Carpentier (Faribault, Minn.).
With their second consecutive Hockey East win, the Friars (12-9-6, 4-8-5) moved into sole possession of fifth-place in the league. Boston University dropped to 8-11-6 overall and 4-10-2 in league action.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, February 8 when they travel to Lowell, Mass. to battle UMass Lowell at 2:00 p.m.
