NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- The Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie at Merrimack on Saturday, February 28 at the J. Thom Lawler Arena. With the tie PC moved to 15-11-7 overall and 7-10-6 in Hockey East action. Merrimack moved to 11-17-5 overall and 6-12-5 in the league.
Providence took a 1-0 first period lead on a power-play goal by freshman Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.). Senior Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta.) and freshman Bill McCreary (Howell, Mich.) battled for the puck in front of Merrimack's net and McDonald, who was wide open, tapped the puck into the empty net at 11:21.
In the second period, Merrimack scored two goals in a span of 35 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. Rob Lalonde fired a one-timer past PC netminder Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) at 4:34. Steve Crusco scored on a breakaway at 5:11 to give Merrimack a 2-1 lead. The Friars tied the game at 2-2 as senior Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) took advantage of a carom off the boards behind the Merrimack net and tapped in his 11th goal of the season at 17:08. Junior Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn.) and senior Jason Platt (Portola Valley, Calif.) assisted on the goal.
The Friars had several opportunies to take the lead, but PC missed out on two power-play opportunities in the third period, including a five minute man advantage. Goepfert finished with 14 saves for PC, while Jim Healey stopped 24 shots for Merrimack. With its seventh tie, PC set a new record in one season for most ties.
