ORONO, Maine -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 4-2 at No. 3 Maine on Saturday, February 21 at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.
After a scoreless first period, Maine opened the scoring early in the second period when Michel Leveille skated in on a breakaway and beat PC goalie Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) just 35 seconds into the period. Maine's Todd Jackson scored at the 4:47 mark of the third period to increase the Black Bears' lead to 2-0.
The Friars cut the lead in half as junior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored a power-play goal at the 10:50 mark of the third period. For Chaput, it marked his 10th goal of the season. Maine quickly responded with a power-play goal of its own at 12:53 on regain the two-goal advantage. The Black Bears increased their lead to 4-1 with Gregg Moore's empty-net goal at 18:12. Providence responded 22 seconds later with a power-play goal, as senior Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) poked in a loose puck for his 10th goal of the season. However, the Friars did not get any closer. Maine's goalie Jim Howard stopped 20 shots to earn the win. Goepfert had another strong performance for the Friars as he finished with 34 saves.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, February 27 when they host Merrimack at Schneider Arena.
