ORONO, Maine -- The Providence College men's hockey team had its four-game winning streak come to an end as the Friars were defeated, 3-2, by the third-ranked Maine Black Bears on Friday, February 20 at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.
The Friars opened the scoring at the 1:40 mark of the first period when senior Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) rifled a wrist shot from the right face-off circle past Maine netminder Frank Doyle, who was screened in front of the net. However, the Black Bears quickly responded with three goals to take a 3-1 lead after one period. Maine tied the game with a power-play goal by Derek Damon at 5:59. Colin Shields and Steve Mullin each scored 1:56 apart to give Maine the two-goal lead.
After a scoreless second period, Providence came out firing in the third period and at the 3:03 mark, PC pulled within, 3-2. Junior David Carpentier (Faribault, Minn.) stole the puck inside Maine's zone and fired a quick slap shot that was saved by Doyle, but the rebound came out to classmate Jeff Mason (Easthampton, Mass.) who tucked the puck into the open side of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Providence kept the pressure on the Black Bears and with 10 minutes remaining Mason nearly tied the game, but his short-handed breakaway attempt was stopped by Doyle. Doyle stopped 25 shots, including 15 in the third period as PC outshot Maine, 16-5 in the final period. Goepfert was solid in net for PC as he made 25 saves.
The two teams will complete the two-game series on Saturday, February 21 in Orono, Maine.
