Women's Ice Hockey Shutsout Connecticut, 7-0

The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut, 7-0, on Sunday, February 15 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.

The Friars won their second HOCKEY EAST series of the season as they swept Connecticut, winning all four games. The line of senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba), junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and freshman Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) continue to produce for the Friars. The trio factored in six of the Friars' seven goals. Leading the way was Zimmerman, who scored her first career hat trick and added two assists. Watrous added a goal and an assist, while Stephenson notched the game-winning goal at 12:13 of the first period. Junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored her seventh goal of the season just 1:08 into the second period as sophomore Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and junior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) assisted on the play. Freshman Kristin Gigliotti (Sauqouit , N.Y.) scored her second career goal and added two assists as she tallied a career-high three-point game.

Sophomore goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) was untested in net for most of the day as she only had to make 10 saves to post her first shutout of the season. Bugden improves to 7-10-2 on the season while the Friars climb to 12-11-2 overall and 8-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST action. Shannon Murphy made 40 saves for the Huskies as they drop to 8-15-5 overall and 4-7-3 in HOCKEY EAST.

Providence College returns to action on Wednesday, February 18 when it faces-off against crosstown rival No. 10 Brown University at Meehan Auditorium at 7:00 p.m on Cox 3.
