PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team scored two first period power-play goals and never looked back en route to a 2-1 victory over Boston University on Saturday, February 14 in Hockey East action at Schneider Arena. The win was the fourth consecutive victory for the Friars, who improved to 14-9-6 overall and 6-8-5 in league play. BU fell to 8-14-6 overall and 4-12-2 in conference play.
The Friars converted on their first two power-play chances. Senior Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead at 11:01 as he fired a wrist shot from inside the left face off circle that beat BU netminder Sean Fields. Classmate Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game winner at 17:45 as he pounced on a rebound in front of the BU net and shot a backhander past Fields.
The Terriers made the score, 2-1, at 4:17 of the third period as Matt Radoslovich tipped a shot past sophomore netminder Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.). Goepfert finished with 33 saves and earned first star honors. Prior to that goal, BU had not scored on Goepfert in 104:17. Goepfert shutout the Terriers (2-0) on February 6.
Wood and sophomore Luke Irwin (Bloomington, Minn.) each had a hand in both PC goals. Irwin assisted on both goals, while Wood scored one and assisted on the game winner.
The Friars return to action on Friday, February 20 at the University of Maine.
