PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Seton Hall decided not to double team Providence's Ryan Gomes, and see if anybody else could beat them one-on-one.
The plan worked.
Gomes got 28 points, but Seton Hall never let any of the other Friars get going, and the Pirates held No. 23 Providence to its lowest point total of the season in a 55-46 victory on Sunday.
"It was our best defensive game from beginning to end since I've been here," said coach Louis Orr, in his third season at Seton Hall.
Andre Sweet was 7-of-9 from the field and scored 18 points to lead Seton Hall (14-4, 4-2), which won its the third straight - all in the conference.
Providence (14-4, 5-2) had a six-game winning streak snapped, and fell out of a first-place tie in the Big East with No. 7 Pittsburgh.
"We didn't play with that swagger (we had) in the past three weeks," Providence coach Tim Welsh said. "We played back on our heels and sideways, but they make you play that way. We just didn't have that look."
Gomes, who had 13 rebounds, scored 20 points in the second half, including 16 straight for the Friars at one point.
Gomes "is a tough guy to stop. I thought we did a good job to make him work for his points, but also did a good job with the other people," Orr said.
J.R. Morris scored 13 points for Seton Hall, which shot 54 percent in the second half, while Kelly Whitney added 10. Andre Barrett, the Pirates' leading scorer with an 18.4 average, was held to a season-low six points, and had four assists.
"I don't care. I mean, we won. That's the main thing," Barrett said. "As long as we win the game, I'm capable of coming back and getting (more).
"My shot wasn't falling as much," the senior point guard added, "but I was trying to get everyone else involved in the plays who were making the shots, to continue to give them the ball."
A field goal by Gomes drew Providence to 38-30 with about 9? minutes left, but Seton Hall went on a 12-8 run to take its biggest lead. Sweet hit a 3-pointer to make it 44-34. Gomes scored inside to draw Providence within eight, but Morris scored off a pump fake to extend the lead back to 10 with about 7 minutes left.
About 3 minutes later, Morris blocked a perimeter shot by Providence's Tuukka Kotti, and went the length of the court for a slam to finish the run.
Gomes had his eighth double-double of the season in the loss, and his third in Big East play.
From the outset, both clubs focused on containing the other's leading scorer. Barrett was held scoreless, on 0-for-3 shooting, in the first half, while Gomes had eight points.
Providence shot 31 percent for the game, and committed 17 turnovers. Apart from Gomes, the Friars shot 7-for-36 from the field, and their starting guards were just 2-of-14.
"It shows we weren't in good rhythm - everybody, not just the guards," Welsh said.
Seton Hall shot 44 percent and had 12 steals.
