Women's Basketball Drops 69-62 Decision To Stony Brook

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Stony Brook, 69-62, at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium on Tuesday, December 7 in Providence, R.I. Kelly Watson registered a career-high 25 points, while Jessica Smith netted 23 points on 11-of-11 shooting from the floor in the victory. Smith's 23 points also tied a career high. The Seawolves improve to 1-4 overall, while Providence drops its seventh-straight game to start the season (0-7). The Friars were led offensively by sophomore Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) who scored 16 points.
Stony Brook held the lead the entire first half, with the exception of a 2-2 tie at the 17:02 mark. The Seawolves led by as many as 12 points (33-21) with 2:01 remaining. The Friars closed out the half with a 5-2 scoring advantage to cut the deficit to nine points at the half (35-26). Watson and Smith each scored 10 points in the opening 20 minutes for Stony Brook. Freshman Kristen Brown (River Vale, N.J.) chipped in nine points for the Friars in the first half, while Snyder added eight.
In the second half, Providence got within four points (50-46) with 12:27 remaining in the game. Stony Brook went on a 10-2 run to push its lead to 60-48 with 10:06 on the clock. PC would rally over the next 6:18 of action to get within two (62-60) on a 12-2 scoring run, but it proved to be the closest the Friars would get the rest of the way. Stony Brook finished the game on a 7-2 run to take the 69-62 victory.
Joining Snyder in double figures for PC were four other players. Junior Allie Gard (Colorado Springs, Colo.) netted a career-high 14 points. Sophomore Kristina Baugh (Boston, Mass.) and Brown scored 11 points each and freshman Savannah Price (Saginaw, Mich.) scored a career-high 10 points. Brown led the Friars on the boards with nine rebounds, while Gard handed out five assists.
For Stony Brook, Dana Ferraro pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Jessie Boylan dished out a game-high six assists.
Providence College (0-7) returns to action on Friday, December 10 against Navy. The game is scheduled to be played at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. at 5:00 p.m.
