PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by La Salle, 68-32, on Wednesday, December 22 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. La Salle's Meghan Wilkinson poured in a career-high 26 points in the victory. The Friars were led offensively by sophomore Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) with 10 points.
Wilkinson connected on nine-of-16 field goal attempts, including eight-of-13 from beyond the three-point arc en route to scoring her 26 points. She set a school record with her eight three pointers, and added two rebounds and one assist. Crista Ricketts posted a double-double for La Salle with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Furstenburg, who missed the first eight games of the season with an injury, returned to Friar line-up to lead the team in scoring with 10 points. In 2003-04, Furstenburg averaged 7.4 points per game as a freshman. Freshman Kristen Brown (River Vale, N.J.) led Providence in rebounding with 10. It marks the third time this season Brown has hauled in 10 or more rebounds in a single game.
La Salle out-rebounded Providence, 44-27, and held the Friars to their lowest single-game point total in the 31-year history of the program (32 points). The Friars scored 33 points in a 61-33 loss to Cheyney State on December 9, 1978 as part of the Southern Connecticut Invitational in New Haven, Conn.
Providence College (0-9) returns to action on Tuesday, December 28 against the University of New Hampshire in a non-conference match-up. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. at UNH's Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham, N.H.
