PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Craig Bradshaw, Chris Gaynor and Torrell Martin scored 11 points each as Winthrop rallied from a 16-point second halftime deficit to defeat Providence 60-54 Tuesday night.
Ryan Gomes scored a game-high 19 points, but was the only Providence player in double figures. The Friars (4-3) shot just 19 percent in the second half on 5 of 26 shooting and 38 percent for the game, missing their last five shots from the field.
Winthrop (4-2) trailed 41-25 after Randall Hanke hit a layup three minutes into the second half.
But that's when the Friars began missing shots. The Eagles, meanwhile, made almost half their shots (11 of 24) after halftime.
Winthrop drew to within one, 46-45 on a layup by Otis Daniels at 10:07. The Friars pulled ahead, 52-47, on two foul shots by Gerald Brown with 6:58 to go.
But Providence scored one more basket the rest of the way while the Eagles connected on eight foul shots and two more field goals.
Martin, who scored eight points in the second half, made a 3-pointer from the corner to put the Eagles ahead at 4:16. The Friars tied it once more, but Winthrop pulled away down the stretch.
The teams were tied four times in the first half before Providence ended the half on a 18-6 run sparked by 10 points from Gomes.
The Friars led 34-22 at halftime.
