Two Friars Earn Independent Volleyball Academic Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior setter Annie Fiorvanti (Northport, N.Y.) and senior libero Jennifer Backes (Seaford, N.Y.), both of the Providence College volleyball team, were named to the Division I Independent Volleyball All-Academic Team this afternoon. Fiorvanti, an Elementary Education major, earned the award with a 3.36 cumulative G.P.A., while Backes, a Finance major, posted a 3.34 cumulative G.P.A.

On the court, Fiorvanti leads the Friars with 752 assists averaging 8.45 per game. She also has totaled 117 kills and 174 digs on the season to average 1.31 and 1.96 per game, respectively. For her career, Fiorvanti, who began the year with 773 assists, has amassed 1,525 overall.

Backes leads the Friars with 275 digs averaging 3.09 per game. She also has totaled 25 assists and 21 service aces on the season. For her career, Backes, who began the year with 307 digs, has amassed 582 overall.

Providence College volleyball (5-20) closes out the 2004 season this Friday, Nov. 5 at Fairleigh Dickinson. The match is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
