PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 16th-ranked Providence College men's cross country team will attempt to qualify for the NCAA's for the 10th consecutive season when it competes at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Saturday, November 13 at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The top two teams will automatically qualify for the NCAA's.
Last season, the Friars placed second behind Iona, but this season the Friars will be looking to capture their fifth NCAA Northeast Regional title and their first since 2001. The Friars have won three of their five meets and have recorded fifth and third-place finishes in the other two meets. Their third-place finish came in the latest meet at the BIG EAST Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on October 29.
PC's squad will be led by junior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland), who has been the team's top finisher in the last two races. Fagan led all Friar runners at the BIG EAST Championships as he ran a time of 23:43 to finish fourth overall. He also captured the New England Championship on October 8 to help the team to a first-place finish. Fagan will be competing in his first NCAA Northeast Regionals.
Senior Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) could be among PC's top finishers on Saturday. He has competed in all five races and recorded a second-place finish at the New England's. He finished fifth at the BIG EAST Championships (23:48). Classmate Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) has led the Friars in three of the five races this season and won the first two meets of the season. At the BIG EAST Championships, Moulton raced to a 10th-place finish (24:05). Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland), also a senior, finished 19th (24:28) at the BIG EAST Championships and will be competing in his fourth consecutive NCAA Northeast Regional.
Junior Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ontario) has competed in four of the five meets this season, including the BIG EAST Championships where he placed 20th (24:49). Sophomore Darren Brown (Spring, Texas) also competed at the BIG EAST and recorded a 32nd-place finish (24:58). Graduate student Michael De Coste (Duxbury, Mass.) rounds out the Friar squad. DeCoste, who is in his first year at Providence, has run the last two races for PC, including the BIG EAST Championships as he placed 21st (24:30).
If the Friars qualify, they will compete at the NCAA's on Monday, November 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
