BOSTON, Mass. -- The 16th-ranked Providence College men's cross country team captured its 24th New England Championship on Friday, October 8, 2004 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. It also marked the fifth consecutive New England crown for Head Coach Ray Treacy's team and the team's eighth title in 10 years. Friar junior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) won the race in a time of 24:20. It marked the 22nd individual title for a PC runner at the New England Championship since 1964. Providence scored 25 points, which was the sixth lowest point total in the history of the meet.
PC also was led by seniors Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ont.) and Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.), who finished second and third, respectively. Wykes took second-place in a time of 24:27, while Moulton finished right behind Wykes in a time of 24:42. Friar sophomore Darren Brown (Spring, Texas) also finished in the top-10 as he crossed the finish line in eighth-place (24:54). Freshman Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.) also ran a strong race, finishing 11th in a time of 25:01 and scoring for the Friars.
Rounding out PC's top seven were graduate student Mike DeCoste (Duxbury, Mass.), who placed 12th (25:04), and junior Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ont.), who finished 16th in a time of 25:01.
"It was a much improved performance from our last race," Friar Head Coach Ray Treacy said. "We could have finished four runners in the top four but Ahmed (Haji) was misdirected. I'm encouraged by our progress."
The Providence men's team returns to action on October 29 at the BIG EAST Championship at Franklin Park.
