PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team will face Rutgers University in a BIG EAST tilt on Saturday, October 9 at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. The game is scheduled to begin at Noon.
Providence enters Saturday's BIG EAST Conference game against Rutgers with a 6-7 overall record and a 0-1 mark in the BIG EAST. The Scarlet Knights currently own a 4-9 overall record and a 0-2 mark in league action.
Last season, the two teams played on October 10 in Piscataway, N.J. Rutgers came away with a 1-0 victory in double-overtime. Prior to the Scarlet Knights' victory on that day, Providence had earned victories in three-straight BIG EAST regular-season games, and one win over Rutgers in the BIG EAST Tournament. In 2002, PC defeated Rutgers, 3-0, to give Head Coach Diane Madl her first BIG EAST win at the helm of the Friar program.
Providence is led by sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.), who has recorded 20 points on five goals and 10 assists. McGow leads the BIG EAST Conference in assists and ranks sixth in overall scoring. McGow scored two goals to lead the Friars to a 3-1 win over Rhode Island in their most recent game on October 6. In the effort, McGow became the first player since Erica Hebert `99 to score 20-points or more in back-to-back seasons. McGow netted 20 points on nine goals and two assists as a freshman. Senior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) is second on the team in scoring with 15 points. She has a team-high seven goals on the season and one assist. Her seven goals marks a single-season career best. Junior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) is third among her teammates in scoring with 13 points on five goals and three assists.
In the Friars' only BIG EAST game of the year, PC fell to ninth-ranked Boston College, 5-1. The two teams were tied, 1-1, at halftime, but BC exploded for four unanswered goals in the second half.
The Scarlet Knights are led by Mary Szymonowicz, who has 10 points on five goals. Corinne Bach and Courtney Hudson are tied for second among their teammates with six points each. Bach has three goals, while Hudson has two goals and two assists. The Scarlet Knights have played two BIG EAST Conference games this season and have posted a 0-2 record. On September 17, Rutgers fell to Syracuse, 3-1. On September 25, the Scarlet Knights were defeated by Villanova, 5-1.
