Lewisburg, Pa. - LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Providence College women's tennis team traveled to Lewisburg, Pa. this past weekend to take part in the Bucknell Invitational. On Saturday, October 2, rain delays forced some singles matches into Sunday, thus eliminating the doubles competition altogether. Throughout the two-day tournament, Providence collected a total of 12 wins, half of which came from its freshman class.

In Flight A, PC was represented by senior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) and junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.). Gilbride dropped her first match to Pittsburgh before posting two victories over Marist and Loyola. In the Flight A consolation final, she was defeated by a different Pittsburgh opponent (4-8).

Flight B action took an interesting twist for the Friars. Through three rounds of competition, senior Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) had recorded losses to Mount St. Mary's and Marist before posting a victory over Duquesne. Meanwhile, teammate Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) lost to Loyola and Villanova. A third round win over Duquesne placed her in the Flight B consolation final versus Christensen. After posting an 8-4 victory over her teammate, Lee finished in 13th place.

Competing in Flight C were junior Marissa Bigelli (Lincoln, R.I.), sophomore Therese Griffin (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.). Of these three, Hoffend advanced the furthest, falling to Mount St. Mary's (3-8) in the consolation final. Bigelli posted one win, which was good enough to take her into the consolation semifinals, where she dropped her final match to Loyola (6-8).

Finally, in Flight D, freshmen Kate Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) and Karla Ruggeri (Lincoln, R.I.) each recorded two wins and one loss. Lyons was the only Friar to capture a first round win and continue competition in the winner's bracket. Ruggeri was set to face Loyola, in a battle for ninth place, before the competition was called due to darkness.

The Friars return to action Friday afternoon, when they travel to Kingston, R.I. for a 3:00 p.m. match versus the Rams.
