Women's Tennis Defeats In-State Rival, Rhode Island

Kingston, R.I. - On Friday, October 8, the women's tennis traveled to Kingston, R.I. for a 3:00 p.m. match versus Rhode Island. The Friars dropped just one singles and one doubles match, to earn their fourth win of the season, a 6-1 victory over the Rams.

In singles action, the Friars were represented by sophomore Jennifer Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) at the No. 1 spot. Tied after two matches, Daigle could not hold off Erin Fleming in a third-set tiebreaker, dropping the match 6-1, 7-6, (8-6). At the No. 2 position, junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) defeated Brigette LaFlamme by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Senior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) picked up her team-leading eighth win with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lindsey Casagrande in No. 3 competition. A 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) defeat of Becca Hedden at the No. 4 spot earned sophomore Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) her third consecutive singles victory. Playing at No. 5, senior Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Whitney Squires. With this victory, Rodger improved to 7-1 on the season. Lastly, Providence's No. 6, senior Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over Revathi Annapareddy, giving PC their final singles win of the day.

In doubles play, Providence notched a victory at No. 1, as Bitetti and Christensen defeated the Rams' Fleming and Squires, 8-4. At No. 2, Gilbride and Rodger captured PC's second doubles win with an 8-3 defeat of Rhode Island's Hadden and LaFlamme. In a hard-fought No. 3 battle, freshman Karla Ruggeri (Lincoln, R.I.) and Lee dropped fell to Annapareddy and Emily Conant, 9-8.
