PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The second-ranked Providence College women's cross country team returns to competition on Saturday, October 16 at the Penn State Invitational. The race will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Penn State University Blue-White Golf Courses.

Providence will be competing for the first time in three weeks. The Friars captured the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, September 25 at Falcon Heights, Minn. as Kim Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) won the individual title.

Providence has won the Penn State Invitational for the past two seasons. Last season, Smith and senior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) finished first and second, respectively, leading the Friars to the title. Providence scored 49 points to finish ahead of Columbia (58 points) and Penn State (84 points).

This season, there will be 34 teams competing in the women's 6K race. In addition to the second-ranked Friars, the field will feature fifth-ranked Duke, 24th-ranked West Virginia and 29th-ranked Boston College. Providence will have 13 runners competing. In addition to Smith and Cullen, seniors Deirdre Byrne (Wicklow, Ireland), Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) and Roisin Quinn (Waterford, Ireland), juniors Jane Nalder (Wellington, New Zealand), Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Bridget Black (Westford, Mass.), sophomores Bernadette Boyle (Faifield, Conn.) and Laura McCarthy (Edina, Minn.) and freshmen Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario), Mary Nelle Trez (Iowa City, Iowa) and Ashley Hughes (Phoenix, N.Y.) also will compete.

Providence has captured their first three meets of the 2004 season and has been ranked second for five consecutive weeks. Following the Penn State Invitational, the Friars will not compete until October 29 at the BIG EAST Championships.
