PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (4-11) tallied multiple season-highs including 92 digs and 80 kills, and defeated Marist College (9-6) this evening by the score of 3-2 at Mullaney Gymnasium in Alumni Hall. Junior Annie Fiorvanti (Northport, N.Y.) led the Friars with a triple-double, including a season-high 59 assists.
The Friars posted a 30-20 victory in game one, and dropped a hard-fought game two, 34-36, before rebounding with a game three victory, 30-24. The Red Foxes came back with a 30-21 win in game four, forcing a deciding game five. Providence settled the 15-9 decision to take the game, and the match.
Fiorvanti totaled season-highs of 13 kills, 18 digs and a team-best 59 assists, notching the first triple-double of her career. Senior captain Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied her third double-double of the year with 25 kills and 14 digs.
Two other Providence players finished with double-digit kill-totals as sophomore Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) had a season-high 22 kills including a team-leading .370 attack percentage (22-5-46). Senior Gayle Malachowski (Warwick, R.I.) rounded out the attack with 11 kills and seven digs.
Senior Jennifer Backes (Seaford, N.Y.) totaled 17 digs, while junior Allison Baker (Glastonbury, Conn.) totaled 15 digs and seven kills. Freshman Kasey Adinolfi (Branford, Conn.) also tallied 12 digs.
In addition to the team accolades above, the Friars posted team season-highs with an attack-percentage of .229 (80-33-205) and 77 assists.
Providence volleyball returns to action Saturday, Oct. 2 with a pair of matches. The Friars host cross-town rival Brown at 4:00 p.m., followed by Maine at 7:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as the senior class will be recognized before the 7:00 p.m. contest.
