PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey earned a 3-2 win over UMass Lowell in HOCKEY EAST action at Providence's Schneider Arena on Saturday, January 31. The Friars were led by their freshman class which accounted for two of the team's three goals, including the game winner.
The Friars took advantage of an early opportunity to get on scoreboard when junior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) netted the first goal of the game at 4:05 of the first period. Chaput held the puck in slot until UMass goaltender John Yaros went down then he fired the puck over him into the back of the net. The River Hawks peppered Friar goaltender Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) but were not able to score until Andrew Martin onetimed a shot during a power-play with 3:10 remaining in the first period.
Lowell took its first lead of the game just 20 seconds into the first period on a goal by Elias Godoy. Godoy took a feed across the goal mouth and deflected the puck past Goepfert. The Friars threatened to even the game during a five-on-three power-play midway through the period but Yaros stymied the Friars. However, PC's special teams did come through as freshman Bill McCreary (Howell, Mich.) notched a short-handed goal at 11:08 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2.
Providence regained the lead at the 4:11 mark of the third period on freshman Tony Zancanaro's fifth goal of the season. Zancanaro wristed a shot high into the right corner of the net for what proved to be the game winner. Providence played a strong third period, outshooting the River Hawks, 13-8.
With the victory, the Friars improved to 11-9-6 overall and 3-8-5 in HOCKEY EAST action.
Goepfert played a strong game in goal for the Friars, recording 28 stops and earning the game's third star. Yaros registered 30 saves for the River Hawks.
