SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Providence College men's hockey team defeated Lake Superior State, 3-1, on Saturday, January 24 at the Taffy Abel Arena. The win was the second in as many nights for the Friars against the Lakers as PC improved to 10-8-6 overall.

Providence jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead and never looked back. Freshman defenseman Dinos Stamoulis (Carle Place, N.Y.) tallied his first collegiate goal at 6:14 to open the scoring. Junior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) stole the puck at the Lake Superior blue line and made a pass back to Stamoulis who ripped a slap shot that hit the right post and bounced into the net. Less than three minutes later, the Friars made the score 2-0 on a power-play goal by senior Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) at 9:09. Goodwin established good position in front of the net and was able to re-direct Jason Platt's shot past LSSU's netminder Jeff Jakaitas. Freshman Colin McDonald increased PC's lead to, 3-0, as he also was able to re-direct a shot past Jakaitas at 12:17. LSSU cut the lead to 3-1 on a goal by Jon Booras at 18:10.

The Lakers came out firing in the second period, outshooting the Friars, 12-5, but PC netminder Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) thwarted the Lakers' chances. Goepfert finished with 29 saves and earned the game's first star for the second consecutive night. Jakaitis stopped 22 shots in the loss.

The Friars are back in action on Friday, January 30 when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to battle the second-ranked Boston College Eagles.
