PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team scored four first period goals en route to a 7-1 victory over Quinnipiac on Friday, January 2 in non-conference action at Schneider Arena.

Senior Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) opened the scoring at 10:38 as he took advantage of a loose puck in front of the Quinnipiac net to collect his sixth goal of the season. At 13:26, PC took a 2-0 lead when freshman Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) capitalized on a rebound off the left pad Quinnipiac netminder Jamie Holden (Telkwa, B.C.) and fired his third goal of the season. Senior co-captain Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta.) and sophomore Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) scored one minute apart late in the period to give the Friars a 4-0 advantage. Loughlean's goal came at 18:34 as his wrist shot from inside the left face-off beat Holden high to the glove side. Gajda redirected a slap shot from senior co-captain Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) past Holden with 26 seconds remaining in the period.

Providence increased its lead to, 5-0, as junior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored a short-handed goal at 12:28 of the second period. Quinnipiac quickly answered Chaput's goal less than a minute later on the power play when freshman Reid Cashman (Red-Wing, Minn.) tallied his second goal of the season at 13:12.

The Friars scored two more goals in the third period to complete the scoring. Senior Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.), who finished the game with a career-high four points, scored on a brilliant effort at 4:34 as he fended off a defenseman, controlled the puck with his left skate a fired a high wrist shot past Eddy Justin (Apple Valley, Minn.), who replaced Holden at the start of the second period. Zancanaro tallied his second goal of the night and fourth of the season at 16:29.

PC junior netminder David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) made 27 saves to earn his first win of the season. Junior Mike Wolfe (Milford, Conn.) made his first appearance in net for the Friars and stopped the only shot he faced. Holden made 12 saves in one period of action for the Bobcats, while Justin stopped 22 shots.

The Friars return to action on Friday, January 9 against nationally-ranked New Hampshire at Schneider Arena.
