PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team defeated the 17th-ranked Seton Hall Pirates, 1-0, on Saturday, September 27 at Providence, R.I. It marked the Friars' first win against the Seton Hall since 1999.
After a scoreless first half, junior Jeff Smith (Omaha, Neb.) kicked in what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 71:29. Smith took a pass from senior Greg Bennett (Dublin, Ireland) and blasted in a shot into the top left corner of the net from 12 feet in front of the net.
Friar junior goalkeeper Jeff Newman (Northboro, Mass.) made six saves and recorded his second consecutive shutout. Ian Joyce made two saves for Seton Hall.
With the win, Providence improved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST action, while Seton Hall fell to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1-2 in league play.
Providence College returns to action on Wednesday, October 1 against Boston College at PC's Glay Field at 3:30 p.m.
