With the return of 10 players from last season's team and the addition of eight newcomers, the Providence College softball team will have more depth and experience in 2003.
For most of last season the Friars had only 10 healthy players, but this season the team will have 18 players as they compete in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars finished the 2002 season with an overall record of 16-36-1 and a 5-15 mark in the BIG EAST. Two of PC's wins included a doubleheader sweep of Syracuse, which finished third in the Conference.
Senior Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.), junior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) and sophomore Nicole Bartholomew (Racho Santa Margarita, Calif.) comprised the PC pitching staff last season and will be relied upon to anchor the staff this season. Peterson posted a 6-11 record on the mound, including winning four of the team's five BIG EAST Conference games. In addition, she recorded a 3.27 ERA, 10 complete games, two shutouts, 177.2 innings pitched and 77 strikeouts. As a freshman, Bartholomew posted some impressive numbers. She became the first pitcher in Providence history to pitch both a no-hitter and a perfect game in the same season. On March 16 at Winthrop, she pitched just the second no-hitter in the school's history to lead PC to a 1-0 victory. On March 28, Bartholomew recorded the second perfect game in PC history, leading the team to a 5-0 win over Quinnipiac. For the season, Bartholomew pitched 108.2 innings, posted a 7-10 record and 2.90 ERA. In addition she batted .232 in 34 games, before sustaining a season-ending injury. This season, Peterson and Bartholomew will serve primarily as pitchers. Van Dusen pitched 132.1 innings, struck out 104 batters and posted a 3.39 ERA. She also played first base and led the Friars in nearly every offensive category. She registered a .325 batting average, with 17 runs, 53 hits, nine doubles, one triple, three home runs and 21 runs batted in. For her efforts, she was named Second Team All-BIG EAST.
The Friar infield also will be strong this season. Aside from Van Dusen, freshman Tara Sullivan (Tualatin, Ore.) may see time at first base. Sullivan earned First Team All-League honors in 2000-01 and the league's most valuable player award in 2001 at Tualatin High School. She also led Tualatin to a second-place finish for three consecutive seasons. Freshman Michele Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) is another newcomer who will play in the outfield. Bowers was a three-sport athlete at St. Joseph's by the Sea, where she was New York Daily News All-Star for four years and league MVP once.
Sophomore Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) is coming off a strong freshman season as she played in all 53 games and posted a .246 batting average from the leadoff position. Petersen played second base and short stop last season. Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) had a productive freshman season, batting .208 and tying a team-lead with three home runs while playing shortstop. In addition, she finished with 33 hits and 12 RBI. Freshman Nicole Hull (Portland, Ore.) also will play in the middle infield and third base. Hull was an All-State athlete in Oregon, where she led her Westview High School team to consecutive league titles (2001-02). Junior Megan St. Ledger (Wilmington, N.C.) also will vie for a spot at second base after playing in 53 games last season. Freshman Lauren Camara (Fall River, Mass.) will add depth to the third base position. Camara captained the softball team at Durfee High School for one season and posted the second highest batting average during her senior season.
Last season, Ashlee Weatherford was the lone catcher on the squad as she played in all 53 games. This season, the Friars will rely on two talented freshmen catchers. Elena Romero (Chulz Vista, Calif.) and Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) will both see time behind the plate for the Friars in 2003. Romero comes to Providence after playing four years at Bonita Vista High School, where she was a team captain for two years. Romero became the first player at Bonita Vista to hit for the cycle in a game. Willete played four years at Moorpark High School and recorded a .347 batting average. She earned team MVP honors and Marmonte League First Team accolades in 2002. Willette and Romero could also see action at third base and shortstop, respectively.
The Friars' depth extends to the outfield. Sophomore Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) led all freshmen last season and finished second on the team with a .258 batting average while playing center field. In addition, Karsnia led the team with 23 runs and finished third with 40 hits. Sarah Morin (Westerly, R.I.), one of only two seniors on the Friar squad, is coming off a solid junior season in which she posted a .221 batting average with three doubles, one home run and eight RBI. Defensively, Morin registered seven outfield assists and made only two errors. Junior Chrissy Iannolo (Syracuse, N.Y.) enjoyed a strong fall season and has improved immensely, according to Head Coach Dana Fulmer. In 2002, she played in 53 games with 17 runs and eight runs scored. Also in the outfield is sophomore Renee Chevalier (W. Boylston, Mass.). Chevalier played in 29 games last season mainly as a pinch runner and scored six runs in limited action. Rounding out the outfield is sophomore Caitlyn Sheehan (Rehoboth, Mass.) who will begin her first season with the Friars. Sheehan graduated from Dighton Rehoboth High School, where she earned team MVP honors during in each of her four seasons. Sophomore Lauren Simone (Medfield, Mass.) is another sophomore newcomer to the Friar squad. Simone will be used the primarily as a pinch runner for the Friars.
Aside from team depth, the Friars also have strong leadership. Last season's team had no seniors, however this season the Friars have two seniors in Morin and Peterson. Both Morin and Peterson along with Van Dusen will serve as team captains. "Leadership is one of our biggest assets this season," Fulmer said. "We have strong leaders setting good examples."
The Friars open their 2003 campaign on March 7 at the Florida State Invitational where they will play Florida International and perrenial-power Michigan in Tallahassee, Fla. The Friars also will play in two other tournaments (one in Ocoee, Fla. and the other in South Carolina) before playing in their first home game of the season on March 26 versus Quinnipiac.
With the added depth and the strong leadership of the upperclassmen, the Friars will have higher expectations this season. "We have no limitations," Fulmer said.
