Providence led by as many as six points in the first half and held its lead until the 7:57 mark, at which point UConn tied the game 20-20. The Huskies finished the half on a 12-2 run to make the halftime score, 32-22. In the opening period, Freeburg and Simmonds each netted 10 points. UConn was led at the half by Jessica Moore, who contributed eight points. The first half of action saw PC shoot 29-percent (9-31) from the field, including two-of-six (33 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. UConn connected on 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) attempts from the floor and four-of-12 attempts (33.3 percent) from three-point territory.
In the second half, the Friars rallied to within one point (42-41) with just 9:58 remaining in the game. The Huskies responded with a 28-11 scoring run to close out the game and earn the 18-point victory.
PC sophomore Quiana Copeland (Mattapan, Mass.) tied UConn's Ann Strother with a game-high nine rebounds. Copeland added seven points and a game-high two blocked shots. Strother led the Huskies in scoring with 13 points. Diana Taurasi finished the game with 12 points, followed by Jessica Moore and Maria Conlon with 10 points each.
Providence will conclude its regular-season schedule with Villanova on Tuesday, March 4 in Villanova, Pa. (7:30 p.m.)
