Women's Basketball Hangs On To Beat Pittsburgh, 57-54

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Pittsburgh, 57-54, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, February 8 in Providence, R.I. The win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Friars, as the team improves to 9-12 overall and 3-7 in the BIG EAST.

Sophomore forward Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) led Providence with a season-high 16 points on eight-of-13 shooting from the floor, and added four rebounds and one steal. Junior guard Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) contributed a season-high 14 points, and recorded three assists, two rebounds and two steals. Sophomore guard Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) registered 13 points, dished out a game-high five rebounds and pulled down three rebounds in the win.

Providence held a 26-24 lead at halftime. Quinn led the Friars in the half with eight points. For Pittsburgh, Laine Selwyn scored 14 of the Panther's 24 points in the first half. Selwyn went on to score a game-high total of 23 points in the losing effort. She also added a seven rebounds.

With 58-seconds remaining in the game, Pittsburgh guard Amy Kunich made the first of two free-throws to cut Providence's lead to one point (55-54). Simmonds grabbed the rebound for the Friars and hit the outlet at halfcourt where PC would call a time-out. After the time-out, Simmonds missed a lay-up and got her own rebound. Simmonds attempted another shot which was blocked by Selwyn as the 30-second shot clock expired. Selwyn brought the ball up the floor for Pittsburgh with 28-seconds remaining in the game, and the lead still remained in favor of Providence, 55-54. Simmonds deflected Selwyn's pass down to the block and Quinn recovered the ball for PC with 13-seconds on the clock, and was fouled by Jessica Allen. Quinn missed the front-end of the one-and-one and Allen rebounded the ball for Pittsburgh. After a Panther time-out, Selwyn commited another turnover on the ensuing inbounds play, and PC regained possession with eight seconds left in the game. Providence inbounded the ball to Epstein, who was fouled with four-seconds remaining. Epstein sealed the game (57-54) as she netted both free-throw attempts.

Pittsburgh's Mandy Wittenmyer joined Selwyn in double figures with 14 points, while Dallas Williams contributed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points and two steals.

Providence (9-12, 3-7 BIG EAST) returns to action on Thursday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. versus Seton Hall in a BIG EAST Conference game. The contest is scheduled to be played at Alumni Hall's Mullaney Gymnasium on the campus of Providence College in Providence, R.I.
