The No. 9 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut, 3-2, on Friday, February 7 at Schneider Arena.

The Friars got on the board 3:31 into the game when junor Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) scored as she put home a rebound the Connecticut goaltender Shannon Murphy left in front of the net. Senior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) and junior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) assisted on the goal. With 7:37 left in the second period, sophomore Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored an unassisted goal as she controlled the puck and danced around several Connecticut defenders before firing the puck through Murphy's five-hole. Less than two minutes later, the Huskies scored as Sara Mahoney beat Providence goaltender, freshman Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland). The Friars got the game-winner 2:36 into the third when freshman Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) stole the puck and broke out on a two-on-one with sophomore Christina Redmond (Dorchester, Mass.). Laffin faked a shot and passed cross-ice to Redmond who burried the puck top-shelf glove-side. Connecticut played the last 34 seconds of the game with an empty net as they pulled Murphy for a sixth skater. With 27 seconds left the game, the move paid off as the Huskies' Shannon Connolly was able to score. It was not enough however as Bugden was able to make one final save as the buzzer sounded.

Providence outshot Connecticut, 38-27. Bugden made 25 saves as the Friars moved to 15-6-6 overall and 10-1-1in HOCKEY EAST, while Connecticut fell to 9-15-4 overall and 1-5-3 in HOCKEY EAST.

No. 9 Providence College returns to action on Saturday, February 8 when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on the Huskies at the UConn Ice Arena at 7:00 p.m.
