No. 8 Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Maine, 2-1

The No. 8 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Maine, 2-1, on Sunday, February 23 at Schneider Arena to sweep the season series and claim the first ever Women's HOCKEY EAST regular season title.

The Black Bears got on the board with 8:56 remaining in the first period when a Tristan Desmet shot trickled off freshman goaltender Jana Bugden's (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) glove and over the goal line. A little over a minute later the Friars evened the score when senior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) scored her 16th of the year with assists going to juniors Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) and Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.). Sophomore Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) sealed the victory for Providence with her game-winning goal at 5:49 of the second period as she beat Maine goaltender Lara Smart on a breakaway. Greaves was sprung by a long outlet pass from sophomore Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) and freshman Gretchen Gottwald (Stoneham, Mass.).

Providence outshot Maine, 32-15, while Bugden made 14 saves. Bugden improved her record to 17-5-5 on the year and helped the Friars move to 21-6-6 overall and 13-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST.

No. 8 Providence College returns to action on Friday, February 28 when they travel to Niagara to take on the Purple Eagles at 7:00 p.m..
