BOSTON, Mass.. -- The 15th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against Northeastern on Friday, November 7 at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern struck first at 14:23 of the first period when Brian Swiniarski pounced on loose puck at the PC blueline and skated in on a breakaway and beat Friar netminder Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.). The Huskies took a 2-0 early in the second period when Swiniarski won a faceoff in the PC zone and the loose puck found senior Eric Ortlip who scored his third goal of the season.
The Friars responded with two goals and tied the game with 3:17 left in the second period. Senior Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season when he beat NU netminder Keni Gibson five-hole on a breakaway, which was setup by senior Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) and junior Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn.) at 14:21 to make the score, 2-1. For Lundberg, it marked his first point of the season. Just over three minutes later, sophomore Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) tied the game at 2-2 when he received a pass from junior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) and fired a high wrist shot over Gibson's left shoulder. Freshman Dinos Stamoulis (Carle Place, N.Y.) also assisted on the goal to pick his first collegiate point.
Northeastern outshot the Friars, 34-27. Goepfert made 32 saves for PC while Gibson stopped 25 shots.
The Friars will return to action on Friday, November 14 at Schneider Arena. The game will be televised live on Cox3.
