PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 3-2, by third-ranked Maine on Saturday, November 22 in front of 2117 at Schenider Arena.
The Friars quickly opened the scoring when freshman Billy McCreary (Howell, Mich.) slid a pass from behind Maine's net and found a wide open Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) whose shot beat Maine netminder Frank Doyle at 00:54. The Black Bears' Ben Murphy tied the game at 11:35 as he capitalized on a defensive turnover and fired a wrist shot that eluded PC junior netminder David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.).
Maine took its first lead of the night at 6:45 when Greg Moore converted on the power-play as he tapped the puck into the open net after a scrum in front. The Black Bears carried the play for much of the first two periods, but the Friars tied the game at 5:42 of the third period. While on the power play, senior Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) fired a wrist shot from inside the blue line that was tipped by a Maine defenseman and into the net.
The Black Bears got the game-winning goal at 13:05 of the third period as Prestin Ryan scored after a two-on-none breakaway. With the win, Maine improved to 10-2-1 overall and 5-2-1 in Hockey East, while the Friars dropped their third consecutive game and fell to 6-5-2 overall and 2-5-2 in conference play.
The Friars return to action on Tuesday, November 25 as they will play Brown University in the 18th annual Mayor's Cup.
