PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by ninth-ranked UMass, 3-2, in Hockey East action on Saturday, November 15 at Schneider Arena.
In the first period, the Minutemen took a 1-0 lead on sophomore Marvin Degon's power-play goal at 9:18. The Friars got on the scoreboard early in the second period as senior Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) responded with a power-play goal from in close to tie the game at 1-1. However, less than a minute later James Solon broke through the Friar defense and flipped the puck passed PC's Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) to give UMass a 2-1 lead.
Providence junior Jeff Mason (Easthampton, Mass.) tied the game once again when his shot deflected off a UMass defenseman and trickled past UMass' Gabe Winer at 6:58. Junior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) and sophomore Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) assisted on the goal. For Mason, it marked his second goal of the season and his first since switching from a defenseman to a forward.
UMass sophomore John Toffey scored the deciding goal at 14:13 mark of the second period after a two-on-one rush. Toffey, who received a pass from sophomore Josh Hanson, fired a shot over Goepfert's right shoulder to give UMass a 3-2 lead. The lead would stand up as Winer made 27 saves for the Minutemen, who improved to 8-2-0 and 5-2-0 in Hockey East play. Goepfert made 29 saves and suffered his first defeat of the season. Providence fell to 6-3-2 overall and 2-3-2 in league action.
The Friars will return to action on Friday, November 21 at Boston College at 8:00 p.m. The game will be televised live on CSTV.
