NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.. -- The 13th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 0-0 tie against Merrimack at the J. Thom Lawler Arena on Saturday, October 25 in Hockey East action. It marked the first scoreless tie in PC hockey history.

In the opening period the Friars carried most of the play as they outshot the Warriors, 11-5, but Merrimack neminder Casey Guenther was strong as he stopped 11 shots. Among his first period stops was a sliding save on PC sophomore Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.), who had been set up in front by classmate Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) at 11:32.

The Warriors nearly took the lead at the 11:38 mark of the second period when junior Steve Crusco fired a wrist shot that was saved off the shoulder of PC netminder David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) and glanced off the post. Later in the period, the Friars went on a five-minute power play, but managed only one shot on the man advantage.

Both teams had chances in the third period and in overtime, but Cacciola and Guenther came up big. Cacciola made 26 saves to earn his first career shutout, while Guenther made 24 saves as he also recorded his first career shutout.

The Friars will return to action on Friday, October 31-November 1 with a home-and-home series versus the UMass Minutemen.
