Men's Hockey Defeats Rensselaer, 5-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team defeated Rensselaer, 5-2, at Schneider Arena on Sunday, October 12 in Providence, R.I.

RPI got on the scoreboard first as Kirk McDonald blasted a shot past Friar netminder Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) during a power play at 7:15 of the first period. Three minutes later, PC's Peter Zingoni scored off a rebound to even the game at 1-1. The Friars took advantage of a turnover in their defensive end and raced up the ice to score the go-ahead goal with four seconds remaining in the period. Freshman Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) finished off the two-on-one break in to give the Friars a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of action.

Ryan Shields evened the game at 2-2 for RPI as he redirected a shot from the right point past Goepfert just after a power-play ended at 6:16 of the second period. PC scored with under 2:00 minutes remaining in the second period to regain the lead. Friar senior Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) intercepted a pass in RPI's zone and rifled a wrist shot past Engineer goaltender Nathan Marsters at 18:19 of the second period.

Friar sophomore Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) gave PC a two-goal lead when he blasted in a slap shot from 10 feet in front of the net. RPI threatened late in the game when junior Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn.) was whistled for a five-minute major penalty with 5:05 remaining in the game. However, PC killed off the penalty, including a six-on-four advantage when RPI pulled its goalie with 1:27 remaining in the contest.

Goepfert played a large role in the Friar victory, and preserved a two-goal lead when he stymied RPI forward Vic Pereira who broke in all alone and rifled a shot that Goepfert kicked away at 13:52. He finished the game with 24 stops. Marsters made 23 saves for RPI.

The Friars return action on October 17 at Minnesota State.
