BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Bryant Matthews scored 26 points and Virginia Tech opened its home Big East season in impressive fashion Saturday night, making 13 3-pointers and beating Providence 92-79.
The Hokies (7-8, 1-2 Big East) , opening a four-game homestand, led 47-31 at halftime on the strength on 9-for-13 3-point shooting. They kept it up to start the second half, pushing their lead to 60-36 as Matthews hit twice from 3-point range.
Providence (9-6, 2-2) got 16 points from Ryan Gomes and 15 from Donnie McGrath.
The Friars whittled the Hokies' lead to 75-67 with 4:39 to play, but the Hokies rallied to get their margin up as high as 15 again and ended their three-game losing streak.
Terry Taylor added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Hokies and Dimari Thompkins scored 15 and had 12 boards. Brian Chase and Carlos Dixon each scored 13.
