PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College sophomore forward Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) was named BIG EAST Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week on Monday, December 23. Pittsburgh's Brandin Knight also earned Player of the Week accolades. For Gomes, who was a member of the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team last year, it marked the first time he has earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors.
Gomes was named Co-Player of the Week after posting a double-double in each of the team's two games last week. He averaged 22.5 points, 14.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in PC's two games last week. He also made 15 of his 16 free-throw attempts in the two games. On December 19, Gomes scored 24 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the Friars' 84-55 win against Richmond at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. His 17 rebounds was a career high and the most by a Friar since Ruben Garces had 19 against Arizona on March 23, 1997. On December 21, Gomes recorded his third consecutive double-double and fourth of the season with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds in a 69-61 loss to second-ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Gomes' stats against Alabama were very impressive considering he played most of the game against the 2002 SEC Player of the Year Erwin Dudley.
Gomes leads the Friars in scoring (19.1 ppg) and rebounding (10.9 rpg). He ranks second in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage (.600) and rebounding (10.9 rpg). Gomes also ranks third in the league in free-throw percentage (.864) and ninth in scoring (19.1 ppg). He has scored 20 or more points in each of the Friars' last three games. Gomes became the first Friar to accomplish that feat since Jamel Thomas posted three consecutive games with 20 or more points in February of 1999.
Gomes, who played for three seasons at Wilby High School, is the son of Teresa Gomes and John Brooks.
The Friars, 4-3, return to action against Northeastern University on Saturday, December 28 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. at 7:30 p.m.
