The No. 6 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Quinnipiac University, 7-1, on Saturday, November 30 at Schneider Arena. Providence sophomore Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) opened the scoring 51 seconds into the first period when she beat goaltender Mel Courtemanche for an unassisted goal. At the 3:48 mark of the period sophomore Emily Gryp (Lexington, Mass.) scored on pass from junior Sarah Youlen (Potsdam, N.Y.) for her first collegiate goal. At the 4:22 mark of the second period sophomore Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) scored her second goal of the year to put the Friars ahead, 3-0, with the assists awarded to senior Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis.). Junior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) would close out the scoring for the Friars in the second period at the 9:14 mark when she beat the Bobcats goalie for her third goal of the season with senior Jenn Butsch picking up her first point of the day. A little over 20 seconds later the Bobcats got on the scoreboard when Laura Magenheimer scored on the power play. Sophomore Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored the next two goals for Providence. The first goal was on the power play 4:35 into the third period with the assists going to freshman Gretchen Gottwald (Stoneham, Mass.) and senior Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.). Zimmerman scored her second goal of the day unassisted at the 6:31 mark of the period. Freshman Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season to close up the scoring on an assist from sophomore Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) at 7:55 of the period. Providence outshot Quinnipiac, 47-10, while sophomore Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) made nine saves on ten shots to earn her first victory of the season. The Friars improved to 8-3-2 on the season as the Bobcats fell to 3-8-0. Providence College plays its next game on Sunday, December 1 against the University of Connecticut in a HOCKEY EAST confrontation at the UCONN Ice Arena.
