Men's Basketball Defeats USDBL In Exhibition Action

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team improved to 2-0 in exhibition action with a 92-77 win over the USDBL on Saturday, November 16 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The Friars were led by junior Maris Laksa (Ventspils, Latvia) who had a game-high 21 points in the win. Laksa was an impressive 5-6 from three-point territory.

The Friars came out flying in the first half and ran up a 27-7 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game. Sophomore Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) had a strong first half, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds in 13 minutes of action. Gomes finished the game with 14 rebounds and 14 points.

Providence shot 52.9 percent in the first half and held a 46-29 lead after 20 minutes of play. Laksa had 13 of his 21 points in the first half.

In the second half, the USDBL chipped away at the Friar lead and got as close as five points (57-52) with 13:13 remaining in the game, before Providence picked up its offense and finished the game with a 92-77 victory.

In addition to Laksa and Gomes, Providence had three other players score 10 or more points. Sophomore Tuukka Kotti (Forssa, Finland) had 14 points and eight rebounds, junior Sheiku Kabba (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded 11 points and junior Marcus Douthit registered 10 points and eight rebounds.

Freshman Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.) posted a game-high 10 assists and added eight points for the Friars.

Former Syracuse star Lawrence Moten and former Rhode Island guard Chad Thomas led the USDBL in scoring with 12 points each.

Providence will return to action in its season opener on Saturday, November 23 at 7:30 p.m. against cross-town rival Brown at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
