PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Holy Cross, 1-0, on Wednesday, October 30 in Providence, R.I.
The Friars got on the scoreboard quickly as sophomore BriAnne Bruni (Bristol, Conn.) chipped a crossed ball from freshman Kerry O'Malley (Longmeadow, Mass.) over Crusader goalie Christine Arsenault just four minutes into the first half. The goal was Bruni's fourth of the year, and the assist was O'Malley's fifth this season. It would prove to be Bruni's second game winning goal of the year. The Crusaders stormed the Friar goal midway through the first half but came away empty when two shots were blocked, and another shot high was high. The second half was a back and forth battle between both squads. Holy Cross made a late attempt to tie the game but were unable to penetrate the Providence defense.
The Friars used two goalies, junior Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) in the first half and freshman Caitlin Pickul (North Andover, Mass.) in the second half. The Crusaders had six shots in the first half but none were on goal. In the second half, Holy Cross had two shots on goal, both of which were stopped by Pickul.
The victory was the third straight for Providence over Holy Cross. With the win the Friars finished the regular season at 8-8-2, while the Crusaders fell to 4-9-2 on the season.
