Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Vermont, 6-0

The Providence College women's ice hockey team won it's first game of the season with a, 6-0, shutout against the University of Vermont Catamounts on Saturday, October 19 at Schneider Arena.

Junior Sarah Youlen (Potsdam, N.Y.), in her first game of the season, opened up the scoring at 4:12 of the first period when she beat goaltender Kami Cote on assists from senior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) and sophomore Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis.). Freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) started her second game and kept the Catamounts off the board stopping the only shot she faced in the period. The Friars got two quick goals in the second period from junior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) assisted by sophomore Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and junior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) assisted by sophomore Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) and sophomore Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas). Butsch got her second point of the game and her first goal of the year early in the third period when she put the puck in the back of the net with the assists going to Halcisak and junior Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa). Sophomore Christina Redmond (Dorchester, Mass.) scored 15 seconds later unassisted from just outside the crease with a nice move that left her all alone as she roofed the puck for her second goal of the year. The sixth and final goal of the day was scored by sophomore Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) with assists going to Zimmerman and Stephenson. Sophomore Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) kept the Friar's shutout intact by making six saves in the second and third periods.

Providence College plays its next game on Saturday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. when the St. Lawrence Saints come to play at Schneider Arena.
