The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated by Virginia Tech, 3-2, on Sunday, October 13 in BIG EAST action in Blacksburg, Va. The Hokies started quickly by scoring the first two goals of the game when Emily Barnhart scored unassisted in the 6th minute followed in the 21st minute by a goal from Jessica Myers. Providence responded in the 51st minute when sophomore Lauren Ritchie (Sayville, N.Y.) found the back of the net on an assist from sophomore Maura Robertson (Wellesley, Mass.). The Hokies struck again in the 68th minute when Barnhart scored her second goal of the day and what proved to be the game-winner. Freshman Kerry O'Malley (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored the Friars second goal unassisted in the 75th minute. Providence was outshot by Virginia Tech, 10-9. Junior goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) played all 90 minutes of the game and recorded 3 saves. The Friars fell to 7-5-2 on the season and 1-4-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Hokies improved to 4-8-1 and 1-2-0 in the BIG EAST. Providence returns to action on Sunday, October 20 at West Virginia University at 1:00 p.m.
