The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Maine, 5-3, in an ECAC Eastern League game on Friday, January 4, 2002 at Alfond Arena.
The Friars jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead. Freshman Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) tallied her fifth goal of the season on a screen shot from the slot at the 6:37 mark for a 1-0 lead. Junior Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass) gave PC a two-goal advantage at the 15:11 mark as she converted on assists from Greaves and sophomore Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.).
Maine cut the Providence lead to 2-1as senior Tracy Caridade scored on a five-on-three power play 3:46 into the second period. The Black Bears tied the game at 2-2 when sophomore Karen Droog scored at the 9:01 mark. The Friars regained a two-goal lead as freshman Carrie Holldorf (Glenwood City, Wis.) and junior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) scored a goal each just 38 seconds apart for a 4-2 lead.
In the third period the Black Bears cut the lead to 4-3 as Droog scored her second goal of the game at the 3:14 mark. The Friars secured the win when sophomore Darlene Stephenson scored an empty goal with 1:15 remaining.
Freshman Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) made 24 saves in the win, while Lara Smart stopped 19 shots for Maine in the loss. The Friars improved to 6-8-2 overall and 3-4-1 in ECAC Eastern League play, while the Black Bears fell to 7-9-1 overall and 1-6-1 in conference play.
PC is back in action on Sunday, January 6 when they face the New Hampshire Wildcats in Durham, N.H. at 2:00 p.m.
