PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on September 17 that Providence College Head Men's Basketball Coach Tim Welsh was named the 2001 recipient of the Paul Kilcullen Sports Advocate Award. The award is given annually by the Rhode Island Sports Council.
Welsh received the award on September 17 at the Seventh Annual Rhode Island Sports Council Awards Presentation and Golf Gala at the Sakonnet Golf Club in Little Compton, R.I. The award, which was named after the late Paul Kilcullen a former Vice President and General Manager of ABC-TV 6 and Chairman of the Annual Sports Council Awards, was presented to Welsh by Jim Hagan, President of the Providence Chamber of Commerce, John Mousseau, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Sports Council, Herbert W. Cummings, Chairman of the Rhode Island Sports Council, and Sally Kilcullen, the wife of the late Paul Kilcullen.
Welsh led the Friars to a strong season last year, with the squad posting a 21-10 record and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997. Welsh's Friars also recorded an impressive 11-5 mark in BIG EAST play. In 2001, the Friars finished in second place in the BIG EAST East division and their 11 BIG EAST wins was the most ever by a PC squad.
Prior to coaching at Providence, Welsh was the Head Coach at Iona College for three seasons. In six seasons as a head coach, Welsh has posted a 118-65 mark, including a 48-43 record in three seasons at Providence.
