ISSUE, Md. -- The Providence College men's golf team opened its spring schedule with a 27th-place finish of 29 schools at the George Washington Invitational at the Swan Point Yacht and Country Club on April 1-2.
Providence shot a two-day, two-round total of 703 (369-334). The Friars were 87 strokes behind McNeese State, which won the Invitational with a score of 616 (305-311) on the 6,761 yard, par-72 course.
The Friars were led by juniors Chris Tobey (97-74--171) and Steve O'Brien (88-83--171) who finished tied for the 96th spot. PC's other golfers were senior Joe Mahoney (tied 123rd, 93-87--180), sophomore Ryan Shaw (tied 144th, 101-90--191) and junior Mike Grande (tied 144th, 91-100--191).
George Wahington's Thomas Blankvoort won the individual title with a score of 144 (72-72).
The Friars will return to action on April 6-8 at the Yale Invitational at the Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Conn.
