PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College freshman men's ice hockey player Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal with 9:17 remaining in the game to propel the Friars to a 3-2 victory over Merrimack College in HOCKEY EAST action at PC's Schneider Arena on Saturday, November 3.
PC senior Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) opened the scoring in the first period, converting on a pass across the goal-mouth from freshman Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn.) with a quick wrist shot. The goal by Omicioli was the Friars' first game-opening score of the season. In five previous games, PC has been scored upon first. Merrimack tied the contest at 1-1 at the 17:39 mark. Ryan Cordeiro scored on teammate Marco Rosa's rebound, which bounced from the boards behind the goal back where Cordeiro beat PC goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.).
In the only scoring of the second period, PC's Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) converted a power-play goal, tallying from Omicioli and senior Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.).
Chaput put the Friars (3-4-0 overall/2-2-0 HOCKEY EAST) up 3-1 with his goal at 9:17 mark. The Warriors (2-5-0 overall/0-4-0 HOCKEY EAST) pulled to within one goal, 3-2, on Alex Sikatchev's power play goal with 5:12 remaining. Merrimack pulled goaltender Joe Exter with 20 seconds remaining and Schaefer made two point-blank saves in the final seconds of the contest. Schaefer made a total of 30 saves in the win, while Exter made 24 in the loss.
