PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Northeastern Huskies earned a 3-1 HOCKEY EAST victory over Providence College on Friday, November 9 at PC's Schneider Arena.
In the first period, neither team was able to crack the scoreboard, though PC outshot Northeastern, 14-11, and had two power plays to the Huskies none.
Northeastern opened a 2-0 lead in the second period when Eric Ortlip and Mike Ryan scored for the NU. Ortlip scored at the 3:35 mark on the power play, redirecting a pass past PC goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.). Ryan scored at the 11:46 mark, putting Northeastern up by two goals.
Providence's Doug Wright (Kamsack, Sask.) pulled the Friars to within one goal at the 13:01 mark when he beat NU's Jason Braun with a wrist shot on the power play.
The only scoring in the final period was an empty net goal by Northeastern, scored by Chris Lynch with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Schaefer and the Friars fought off a five-on-three power play advantage for Northeastern in the period, with Schaefer making a total of 16 third-period saves.
Schaefer made a career-high 44 saves in the contest, surpassing his old record of 42 he set last year against Boston College on March 17 at FleetCenter in the HOCKEY EAST Championship game. Braun stopped 33 shots for Northeastern.
The two teams return to action on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at NU's Matthews Arena when they play each other for the second time this season.
