BOSTON, Mass. - The 10th-ranked Providence men's cross country team scored 59 points to capture the 2001 NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship on Saturday, November 10 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. PC's eighth-ranked women's team scored 95 points and finished second behind Boston College (53 points) in the women's race. The top two men's and women's teams advance to the NCAA Championship on Monday, November 19 at Furman Univeristy in Greenville, South Carolina.
In the men's race senior All-American Hamish Thorpe (Auckland, New Zealand) finished second (29:45) to lead the Friars. Senior Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland) finished sixth (30:02), freshman Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) took 12th place (30:27), freshman Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) finished 17th (30:37), freshman Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) placed 22nd (30:51) and junior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn.) finished 33rd in a time of 31:08. Dan Wilson from the Univeristy of Connecticut won the men's race with a time of 29:44.
In the women's race the Friars were paced by senior Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.H.). Shearman finished seventh overall in a time of 21:03. Junior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) finished ninth (21:06) and senior Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland) finished 11th 21:10 to round out the top-15 runners overall. Freshman Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) finished 27th (21:36), junior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland) placed 41st (21:51), senior Marissa Colburn (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished 57th (22:14) and sophomore Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) finished 73rd (22:32).
The men's and women's teams return to action on November 19 at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Greenville, South Carolina. The PC men's team will be making its seventh-straight appearance, after finishing third in 2000. The women's team will be making its 13th-consecutive appearance. In 2000, the Friar women finished ninth at the NCAA Championships.
