The Providence College women's hockey team opened the 2001-02 season with a 5-3 loss at No. 1 ranked Minnesota-Duluth at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center on Friday, October 12.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead at the 13:36 mark of the first period as junior forward Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) scored on a powerplay off an assist from sophomore defenseman Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.).

Defending national champion, Minnesota-Duluth responded with four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead at the 16:14 mark of the second period. Junior forward Maria Rooth (Angelholm, Sweden) scored two goals to cap off the four-goal spurt.

The Friars climbed back as Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) scored at the 17:23 mark of the second period to cut the lead to 4-2. PC freshman forward Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) scored her first career-goal at the 2:25 mark of the third period to make it 4-3. The Friars could not get any closer as Minnesota-Duluth freshman defenseman Larissa Luther (Bloomington, Minn.) scored on an empty net with eight seconds remaining.

Providence goaltender Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) made 21 saves while senior Tuula Puputti (Kuopio, Finland) stopped 22 shots for the Bulldogs.

The two teams are back in action on Saturday, October 13 at 8:00 p.m.
