PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the Loyola University Chicago Ramblers, 3-0, in women's soccer action on Friday, September 29 at Providence, R.I. Providence junior forward Caitlyn Welsh (Winter Springs, Fla.) sparked the offense with three goals as the Friars snapped a seven-game losing streak.
The Friars and the Ramblers played a scoreless first half before Welsh ignited the Friars at the beginning of the second half. Welsh scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 47:37 when she converted on a Kristen Gardner (Trumbull, Conn.) pass from the right side of the goal.
Less than two minutes later, Welsh registered her second goal of the game. She scored on a rebound of a Katie Auger (Putnam, Conn.) blast that hit the post. Welsh promptly fired the ball past Loyola goalkeeper Erica Pedini (Plano, Texas) to give the Friars a 2-0 lead at 49:17.
Welsh tallied her final goal of the game at 54:13. She scored after Melissa Crowley (Duxbury, Mass.) shot the ball off of the crossbar to give the Friars the 3-0 decision.
In goal, Loyola's Pedini and Katie Roland (Chicago, Ill.) combined to stop nine Friar shots. Providence freshman Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) recorded two saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
With the win, Providence improves its record to 3-7-0 overall. Loyola's record falls to 5-5-0 overall with the loss.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 1, when they host St. John's University at PC's Glay Field at 1:00 p.m.
